How did we choose?

It is not always easy to find your way around in the mountain bike area, in particular, because of the many different models, often linked to a very specific use.

Before going into detail, it is, therefore, necessary to take an overview of the main types of ATV sold on the market.

  • All-mountain mountain biking: it is the most versatile practice of mountain biking, where it is mainly a question of traveling on mountainous trails, but without a specific performance objective. It is preferable, then, to choose a light full-suspension bike, with a travel of 120 to 150 mm approximately (we return to these concepts later).
  • Cross Country (XC): it is one of the most popular mountain biking practices and the only one to be subject to discipline at the Olympic Games. Generally practiced in the mountains, it involves crossing alternating climbs and descents and various types of surfacing, even the muddiest or rocky. Semi-rigid as well as hanging bikes are suitable for this practice, but it is better to avoid excessive travel, which can prove to be a handicap when climbing.
  • The Downhill or Down Hill (DH): as its name suggests, this mountain bike is only designed for descents, which must be done as quickly as possible. It is necessary to opt for a full-suspension MTB with a large clearance (minimum 150 mm) and having an effective braking system (preferably hydraulic disc brakes). Note that the climb must be done by another means, as this ATV is not suitable for this.
  • Enduro: located at the crossroads between XC and DH, it is an intense sports practice where a very uneven path (but mainly consisting of descents) must be covered in minimum time. Therefore, it is useful to have a light, maneuverable bike with an excellent suspension system.
  • The FatBike: it’s a 4 × 4 mountain bike, with a massive bike capable of taking you through extreme and even snowy environments. Since it is equipped with extra-large wheels that allow a good grip, it is a choice often preferred by beginners.

It is of course important to choose your ATV according to the practice you intend to do. In this selection, we mainly looked at All-Mountain or cross-country mountain bikes, because they are the most versatile and generally the most sought after.

Before purchasing, it is essential to observe a whole series of parameters on your future ATV:

  • The structure: it is divided into two types. The rigid bike has a single suspension on the front fork while the full-suspension bike also has a central suspension. The first is more suitable for the ascent and the second for the descent. For intermediate users, it is generally the full suspension that is most recommended, provided that you opt for a light model. You should know that when climbing, part of the energy is used in the rear suspension, so a beginner can be in difficulty.
  • The material: we generally find steel, aluminum, or carbon frames. The former is more affordable, but the latter is (much) lighter (which saves your efforts) and more rigid (for often increased comfort).
  • The size of the bike: it is important to choose a bike suitable for your body type, to avoid any discomfort. If many manufacturers use standard terms (S, M, L, etc.), you should still consult the size chart, as it may differ from one manufacturer to another.
  • Wheel size: originally 26 ”wheels were the norm. But gradually the 29 ”wheels have become established because they offer greater comfort and better grip. On the other hand, this increases weight and decreases handling. As a result, a compromise is gaining more and more space, with the 27.5 ”wheels.
  • Brakes: good brakes are essential for your safety. V-brakes are only suitable for occasional and safe use, but are generally not recommended for slightly more sporty use. Hydraulic disc brakes are the most reliable, but also the most expensive. A good compromise is given with mechanical brakes (even if we recommend the hydraulic disc brakes, specially designed for downhill).
  • The type of fork: you must take into account the travel offered, that is to say, the maximum amplitude of vertical oscillation of the fork relative to your fork. It is expressed in millimeters. The greater the travel, the more comfortable the descents. An average travel of approximately 120 to 150 mm is ideal for a versatile practice, while a descent practice is optimal at least 150 mm, and cross-country at 120 mm maximum.
  • Transmission: the triple chainring has eight to ten speeds and is suitable for beginners and occasional users. The double chainring offers 10 to 11 speeds and offers more comfort in that you have to change gears less often, but it requires better physical condition. Finally, the single-plate transmission is lighter and easier to handle. But this is often found on more efficient models.

It was with all these parameters in mind that we carried out a first overview of the market. This allowed us to isolate a dozen reliable brands, each offering a series of popular products among which fifteen interested us more.

We then tried to find the most versatile bikes as well as those with the best value for money. For this, we relied on numerous specialist tests, both on the French and English sides.

To best reach our target audience, we have not gone too high in budgets, so that bikes remain affordable for everyone.

We have thus come to the conclusion that the following models are the 5 best mountain bikes of the moment.
